Lumbar puncture is the gold standard for collecting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the subarachnoid space. The procedure involves a puncture between two lumbar vertebrae and also allows the measurement of CSF pressure. Analyzing the CSF itself and the pressure in the subarachnoid space allows for different diagnostics in patients showing symptoms of different neurological and non-neurological diseases. 
Access to the central nervous system through a lumbar puncture may also be part of a medical therapy, for example, for the injection of drugs such as nusinersen in patients with spinal muscular atrophy.1
Diagnostic and therapeutic lumbar punctures can be performed with traumatic and atraumatic needles.
