SPROTTE®

For Atraumatic Spinal Anesthesia

In the mid-1970s, regional anesthesia was plagued by complications like post dural puncture headaches, neck stiffness, nausea, and tinnitus.1 This began to change with the development of the SPROTTE® needle, a joint development by Prof. Sprotte and Horst and Heinrich Pajunk. Their goal was to minimize the risk of nerve, dura, and blood vessel trauma.2

Thanks to the collaboration between Prof. Sprotte’s extensive clinical experience and the medical technology expertise of the Pajunk brothers, they succeeded in creating a puncture needle with a unique tip geometry in 1979. This innovation significantly enhanced the safety and reliability of regional anesthesia for all patients,2 making a breakthrough in the field.

Since then, studies have described a reduction in the incidence of post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) when using the SPROTTE® needle instead of the conventional traumatic needle types.3, 4, 5

With the SPROTTE® needle, PAJUNK® has established a new standard in tip geometry design for atraumatic needles.

Sprotte Overview

Sprotte Features & Advantages

Ogival Tip

giving the needle atraumatic properties:

  • Reduces the incidence of PDPH.13-17
Large Lateral Eye

Burr-free lateral opening with atraumatically rounded edges:

  • Quicker CSF flow than with cutting needle.18
  • Allows the local anesthetic to spread better and mix well with the cerebrospinal fluid.18

The following products have been compared: 27G Quincke and 25G SPROTTE®.

High-Quality Stainless Steel Needle

Its surface and inner lumen are processed with the highest precision and are burr-free:

  • Designed for optimized gliding properties and CSF backflow.
Precision-Ground Metal Stylet

The stylet closes the lateral eye precisely11 and is provided with burr-free atraumatically rounded edges:

  • Designed to stabilize the needle.
  • Prevents tissue coring in the subarachnoid space.11, 12
Standard Hub
  • Designed for rapid detection of small fluid amounts.
  • This facilitates the immediate detection19 of even the smallest CSF amounts.
Magnifying Hub
  • Designed for easy visualization of blood or CSF.
Color-Coded Stylet
  • For easy identification of the needle size.
Introducer with Facet Tip

with facet grinding:

  • Diameter and length matched to each spinal needle size.
  • Introducer length can be selected depending on the need.
  • Minimal reduction of useable working length of the spinal needle thanks to the short needle hub.
  • Funnel-shaped hub is designed to reduce chance of spinal needle tip damage during insertion into the introducer.
Excellent Portfolio
  • Wide range of needles in various diameters and sizes.
  • Special versions for pediatrics and obese patients.20, 21
