Puncture Needles for Epidural Anesthesia
Epidural anesthesia has a long tradition. As early as 1901, Sicard and Cathelin injected cocaine caudally into the epidural space. In the 1930s, Dogliotti popularized the technique by describing the "loss of resistance technique" for identifying the epidural space. Around twenty years later, in 1949, Curbelo introduced continuous epidural anesthesia.1
Today, the epidural anesthesia is widely used, including major abdominal surgery2, thoracic surgery3, orthopedic surgery4, cardiac surgery3, cesarean section4 and for pain relief during labor analgesia5.
Especially in labor analgesia, the placement of an epidural catheter is considered the most effective method of pain control6. In Germany, according to a 2015 perinatal survey, it is used in 22.1% of obstetric patients7.
