PAJUNK Philosophy
Innovating together — building on experience, focused on better patient care.
We combine the strength of a global leader in regional anesthesia with the agility of a start-up - a mindset rooted in our founding generation and still driving us today.
This unique blend empowers us to move beyond simply responding to market needs. We anticipate them. By working hand-in-hand with medical professionals, we develop purpose-driven solutions that redefine what’s possible in regional anesthesia and beyond. This leaves healthcare professionals with more time for what truly matters: the patient.
Innovation Starts with Listening
Our collaboration with medical professionals is a key part of how we work. Through this ongoing exchange of ideas and experience, we explore clinical needs, identify opportunities, and translate insights into practical solutions — across a range of applications.
The following examples highlight how this close cooperation has shaped products and technologies used in everyday clinical practice.
Prof. Dr. Günter Sprotte – Shaping Safer Spinal Anesthesia
In the mid-1970s, complications like post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) limited the safety of spinal anesthesia. Together with Horst and Heinrich Pajunk, Prof. Dr. Günter Sprotte developed the original SPROTTE® needle — featuring a unique tip geometry that minimized trauma and enhanced patient safety.
Their 1979 innovation set a new standard for atraumatic spinal anesthesia — helping to reduce PDPH and minimize trauma. Numerous studies have since confirmed its advantages.
“Since 1979, PAJUNK has perfectly implemented my idea of an atraumatic needle. Only the original bears my name,” comments Prof. Dr. Sprotte.

Dr. Chris Mitchell – An Innovator with Insight
Dr. Chris Mitchell developed a prototype that applied Cornerstone reflector technology to needles — inspired by his research into improving their visibility under ultrasound. He presented his prototype to PAJUNK, where it quickly generated strong interest. From an initial sketch to the first design took just a few hours — and the resulting design is still largely in use today. SonoPlex® was launched in 2008.
“It was an amazing experience to join up with PAJUNK, to work so much as a team and nearly family, to get this product onto the market as quickly as possible. And literally from the time I met them in person to the time the product was on the market was only 12 months,” says Dr. Mitchell.

Dr. Gisela Meier – Partnering to Advance Regional Anesthesia
Dr. Meier’s collaboration with PAJUNK began in 1987 — driven by a shared goal: developing safer, more effective techniques in regional anesthesia. The partnership quickly grew into a long-term, trust-based exchange of ideas and innovation.
“It was clear from our very first meeting that we shared the same goal: to develop innovative products to benefit patients,” comments Dr. Meier. “At all times, PAJUNK was approachable, open to innovations and valuable feedback was always provided swiftly,” she adds.

Dr. Ban Tsui – Advancing Continuous Nerve Block Catheters
The E-Cath® II / E-Cath® II Plus system was developed in collaboration with Dr. Ban Tsui. It combines clinical experience and technical expertise to make the Catheter Over Needle (CON) technique as easy as a single-shot technique — adding value for daily use as well as in centers less familiar with continuous nerve blocks. The system helps reduce the risk of leakage and dislodgement while increasing catheter stability.
